If you’ve been on TikTok lately, you’ve probably seen a video of Kylie Jenner cuddling up to her best friend Stassie Karanikolaou and appearing to be on the verge of a kiss. Given the video’s 3 million likes and more than 10,000 comments, we’d be shocked if you hadn’t seen it. And as you would probably guess, they’re full of rumours punctuated with the nails emoji, which is the standard gay symbol on the network.
One TikTok user says, “They obviously want to kiss so badly, and honestly I want them to kiss so badly too.” Another person says, “Kylie is obviously gay and can’t come out or whatever.” Despite Kylie Jenner’s openly heterosexual relationship with rapper Travis Scott, it appears that supporters of the Kardashian family still think — or at least hope — that this video is her coming out.
More videos of the two of them showing affection for one another have emerged in recent weeks. Thousands of people have analysed the videos (practically frame by frame) and dissected Kardashian lore to determine whether the two women are simply touchy-feely friends or whether Kylie is interested in other women.
This is not the first time that a celebrity has been the focus of sexual orientation rumours. Women have been questioned about their sexuality for decades. From Madonna and Britney being questioned over their kiss at the 2003 VMAs, to Miley Cyrus being assumed to be gay before she came out in 2013, to Billie Eilish being questioned over her Lost Cause music video, which was a celebration of female friendship. In fact, throughout the past few years, there have been rumours that Kylie’s own sister Kendall Jenner is gay.
Theories about women’s sexual orientation start to circulate if they even embrace another woman for a second too long. Things may get quite awkward very quickly.
